PSG superstar and France forward Kylian Mbappe has opened up on his failed move to Real Madrid during the last summer transfer window.

In a tell-all interview with French publication RMC Sport, as relayed by Sky Sports, Paris Saint-Germain and France forward Kylian Mbappe has shed light on his failed attempt to join Real Madrid during the summer transfer window earlier this year.

Mbappe, who has been with PSG since 2017 when he arrived from fellow Ligue 1 club AS Monaco, entered the final year of his contract with the Parisian giants this summer. Talks over a new contract did not pan out as the club would have hoped, leaving them with the prospect of losing their superstar forward.

Mbappe was then subject of multiple transfer bids from long-term admirers Real Madrid late in the summer transfer window, but PSG did not entertain the offers from the La Liga heavyweights and instead held on to the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner, now staring at the possibility of losing him on a free transfer next year.

Mbappe has now spoken out on the events that unfolded in the past few months at PSG, revealing that he made his desires of leaving the club known to the hierarchy as early as July, so that they could get in a significant fee for his services and secure a top-quality replacement.

“It (PSG) is a club that has brought me a lot. I have always been happy, the four years I have spent here, and I still am. I wanted everyone to come out of this stronger, that we leave hand in hand, to make a good deal and I respected that. I said, ‘If you don’t want me to go I will stay’,” Mbappe said in the interview.

“People have said that I refused six or seven offers of extension, that I do not want to talk to [sporting director] Leonardo, this is absolutely not true,” he added. “They told me ‘Kylian now you talk with the president.’ Personally, I did not appreciate the fact that they said I came [with the news he wanted to leave] the last week of August. I said at the end of July that I wanted to go.”

With the contract situation far from resolved, there is a very good chance to Mbappe leaves the club for no transfer fee next year. In fact, it has been claimed that Real Madrid have already prepared a bumper contract offer to welcome him to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2022. It remains to be seen if the 22-year-old gets his desired move in the coming months.
