Kurt Zouma believes his decision to leave Chelsea was correct as he hopes to improve the current West Ham side.
As Chelsea vigorously chased Jules Kounde from Sevilla, Kurt Zouma automatically became the dispensable one. Thomas Tuchel had hoped to raise significant funds towards signing the La Liga defender through sales, and the Frenchman was told he could leave.
The decision somewhat backfired as Zouma found a new home in neighbours West Ham United, but Kounde remained at Sevilla. As a move never transpired for the La Liga defender, questions were raised over Chelsea’s decision to sell Zouma, who had by then already joined West Ham in a £30 million deal.
Others, however, directly questioned Zouma for his decision to leave the Blues for the Hammers, considering the gulf in quality between both teams. But the Frenchman has defended his decision, stating he has no qualms about the transfer and justified his move to David Moyes’ side through various reasons.
Zouma has begun life under Moyes quite brightly and showed his true quality during West Ham’s weekend win over Leeds United. In a recent interview, as relayed by Tribal Football, the defender reasoned the decision behind his move and why it’s the correct one for his career.
Zouma said, “My transfer to West Ham? What already seduced me is the club. I think it’s a good club that is making great progress. They did an exceptional job last year to qualify for the Europa League. And there, we will have a difficult group; we can do something this year.
“The fact of having spoken with the manager (David Moyes), who helped me a lot and convinced me, who showed me that he wanted me. He thinks that I will bring more to the team from my experience. I’ve been in England for a long time, and I’m in the France squad, so it’s true that I can bring all my defensive and offensive quality.
“I needed to play more. Obviously, I was in a team that was doing really well. Coming here has allowed me to compete more to play. It’s a club that wants to progress and grow. And I want to be part of this project. The integration? I get along well with everyone honestly; I’m someone who talks to everyone.”
Zouma’s true value will be realised if he manages to keep the performances levels at West Ham to their very best and helps the Hammers either better their finish from last season or maintain it. He is at the perfect place to advance his career for his age and the club’s long-term future.
