Kevin Campbell is not too keen to have Yves Bissouma at Arsenal
Speaking ahead of what should be a charged North London Derby, Kevin Campbell has stoked flames by claiming that he would not want to have Tottenham Hotspur star Yves Bissouma at Arsenal.
The defensive midfielder earned his stripes at Brighton & Hove Albion before moving to Tottenham in the summer of 2022. He endured a difficult debut campaign in white, struggling with injuries and consistency. Bissouma looked like a shadow of the player who dominated at the Amex was was largely considered a flop.
Fast forward to 2023-24 and the 27-year-old is today deemed undroppable. Bissouma is a key cog in Ange Postecoglou’s system and is the destroyer whom Spurs were keen on since the days of Moussa Dembele.
One could argue that the Malian has a reasonable chance of breaking into most top sides in the Premier Leagues, including Arsenal. However, Kevin Campbell thinks otherwise. Speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel, Campbell admitted that Bissouma is doing well but would not make it into the Arsenal lineup.
“We were linked with Bissouma at one stage, and he is starting to look a bit like his old self now. He’s starting to be a bit freer in the midfield, but if you look in the position they play, no, I would take the Arsenal 11 all day long.”
The former star’s comments can be taken with a pinch of salt given his allegiance to Arsenal. Also, the Gunners went big for Declan Rice in the summer and it has largely paid off. Given the club record fee they forked out for the English star, it makes sense that they would opt for him over Bissouma.
We will know this weekend who the superior player is when Rice and Bissouma go up against each other. One can argue that whoever controls the midfield on the night should give their side a huge advantage to not just take bragging rights but also keep the pressure on defending champions Manchester City at the top of the table.
It remains to be seen if Campbell will stick to his guns should Bissouma upstage Rice on the night.
