Former Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg has urged Julian Nagelsmann to take his next job abroad amid Manchester United links.
Julian Nagelsmann, without a job since leaving the German national team, has been advised to pursue his next role abroad, with Manchester United among the clubs reportedly considering him as a potential managerial candidate.
Former Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg believes a move to the Premier League could help revive his career. The 39-year-old has been without a job since his departure from the DFB following a disastrous World Cup campaign last summer.
Once regarded as one of the brightest managerial talents in European football, Nagelsmann’s reputation has taken a hit following underwhelming spells with Bayern Munich and Germany.
His next appointment could therefore prove crucial to his career trajectory, and Effenberg believes returning to German football would not be the right move.
Writing in his column for T-Online, the former midfielder addressed the growing speculation linking Nagelsmann with Manchester United, who are reportedly considering their options amid Michael Carrick’s difficult start to the season.
“Manchester United are currently mired in a deep crisis. And former national team coach Julian Nagelsmann is already being tipped as a potential new manager there,” Effenberg wrote.
“The 39-year-old has been without a job since his departure from the DFB following a disastrous World Cup campaign last summer. He has been linked with several clubs, including some in Germany.
“Regardless of whether or not Nagelsmann chooses United, I would strongly advise him to head abroad for his next role. I don’t believe taking another coaching job in Germany makes any sense for him at this stage.
“Nagelsmann should follow the path taken by coaches like Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, Hansi Flick, and Fabian Hürzeler. Step away from the German public eye for a while.”
Taking charge at Manchester United might not be an easy task
Manchester United presents a potential platform for Nagelsmann‘s revival. United have been linked with several potential managerial candidates, with Nagelsmann reportedly among the names under consideration. Christopher Vivell, the club’s head of scouting, is also said to favour the German over some of the alternative options being discussed.
However, taking charge at Old Trafford would represent a major challenge. United have struggled to regain their place among England’s elite, and several high-profile managers have failed to restore the club to its former standards.
Nagelsmann still has plenty to prove despite his impressive early managerial career. His work at RB Leipzig established him as one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches, while his Bayern Munich spell produced a Bundesliga title and an impressive average of 2.31 points per game across 84 matches.
A move to England could provide the platform Nagelsmann needs to rebuild his reputation, although United’s current instability would make the job particularly demanding.
Effenberg’s advice is not necessarily an endorsement of Manchester United as Nagelsmann’s eventual destination. Rather, he believes the German should experience a different footballing environment and step away from the scrutiny surrounding him at home.
Whether Old Trafford becomes his choice remains uncertain, but Nagelsmann has been encouraged to look beyond Germany as he considers the next chapter of his career.
