John Giles makes Antonio Conte claims

John Giles believes Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte would have been a perfect fit for Manchester United.

Former Leeds United player John Giles insisted Manchester United could have appointed Antonio Conte as the Italian would have been a tailor-made choice for the Red Devils.

United had appointed Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Soksjaer but the club had believed to have knocked on the door of a number of managers before appointing the current Austrian manager last November.

Under Rangnick’s management, United didn’t look like they were trying to win things but the manager tried to bring in a change which had been needed for a long time.

Rangnick’s philosophy might not have worked as a whole but the manager slammed the owners in press conferences a number of times and it might be one of the reasons why the club didn’t push much when the offer from the Austrian football association came for him.

Conte secured Champions League football for Spurs last season and the North Londoners had hoped to make more progress under his watch. They started the season on a bright note but that winning mentality has somewhat diminished to some extent.

On the other side, Erik ten Hag didn’t have the most desired start as defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford put some serious question marks over his Old Trafford future.

But since then United have found a specific way which has been pretty entertaining and effective too. They have secured a place in the Europa League knockout stage and \ are just one point adrift of the top four in the Premier League.

Conte doesn’t seem to have a long-term vision as he always wants instant success, while the Red Devils hierarchy wanted a man who could implement his plans for the next few seasons.

John Giles said, “He would have been made for Manchester United. If he get the same attitude from the Manchester United players that he’s getting from Spurs, they’d be a real team. Maybe the new man will get there, but Conte got there with Spurs without spending much money.”
