Joe Cole believes Romelu Lukaku is on borrowed time at Chelsea unless he can turn his fortunes around fast.

Much was expected of Romelu Lukaku when Chelsea splashed out a club-record fee to bring the Belgian back to Stamford Bridge last summer. However, it has not gone according to plan, and the striker now faces a race against time to save his career in Stamford Bridge.

That is the opinion of former Blues hero Joe Cole. As quoted by Daily Mail, Cole believes Lukaku has six weeks to save his career at Chelsea. This comes after he missed out on the starting lineup for the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday against Crystal Palace.

“Lukaku has six weeks to save his Chelsea career.”

Thomas Tuchel had no place for Lukaku in the starting lineup, and it is telling given what was at stake on that night. The FA Cup represents Chelsea’s last chance at silverware this season, and the fact that their manager chose to leave their star striker out of the starting XI speaks volumes of his standing in the squad today.

The giant Belgian has not found the back of the net for the Blues since March 19 and had an excellent opportunity to break his drought on Sunday. However, the struggling Chelsea forward displayed the same profligacy that has plagued him all campaign, leaving Tuchel frustrated.

Cole, for his part, is equally livid and believes that when it rains, it pours. Given that Lukaku has scored just 12 goals in 37 appearances since his return to Stamford Bridge, it is difficult to argue with Cole’s assessment.

“When it’s not going for you, it’s not going for you.”

Cole went on to add that Lukaku should take a leaf out of fellow striker Timo Werner’s book. The German has enjoyed a turbulent spell at the Bridge but has stepped up and found the back of the net consistently in recent weeks. Whether Lukaku can heed the advice of the Chelsea icon remains to be seen.

Lukaku proved himself to be a world-class striker at Inter Milan. While he started well in his return to Chelsea, the 28-year-old has failed to keep his hot streak going. The Belgian forward looks starved of confidence and is a far cry from the dominant frontman who led the line at the Giuseppe Meazza.

With just weeks left in the season, it is now or never for Lukaku to prove his worth. Failing to do so could prompt Chelsea to pull the plug on what has so far been a very expensive mistake.
