Jermaine Pennant tips title challenge for Liverpool, writes off Manchester United

Jermaine Pennant has tipped Liverpool to challenge for the title and believes Jurgen Klopp’s side look more ready than rivals like Arsenal.

Jermaine Pennant has been talking about Liverpool on talkSPORT and touching upon several subjects. With the international break now underway, everyone can discuss their clubs in detail and reflect on how the season has transpired.

Liverpool have made a bright start to the campaign despite drawing to Chelsea on the opening weekend. After that, Jurgen Klopp’s men have recorded three straight wins, and they were a man down in two of those. Similarly, Arsenal have the same points, having only managed a draw against Fulham.

Pennant, who had connections with both teams during his playing days, feels Liverpool looks more ready than Arsenal after four games. He also ruled out a ‘title challenge’ from Manchester United after yet another disastrous start from Erik ten Hag’s men.

Pennant also touched upon the fact that Liverpool players will feel more confident after the Mohamed Salah issue got resolved and also praised new signing Diminik Szoboszlai. His comments appeared on talkSPORT as he discussed Liverpool’s readiness for a potential title challenge ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United.

Pennant said, “They look solid. Little bit worried about the defence, but going forward, they look strong. The midfield is a really good midfield now. Young, energetic, [Dominik] Szoboszlai looks very good.”

“Keeping Mo is not only going to be good for Liverpool but good for everything to do with Liverpool. The players will see Mo there; they know what he will give you. Goals, assists, and with him staying there, they should now be looking to challenge Manchester City like they have for the last five years, bar last season.

“At the moment, I’d say Liverpool are in a better place than Arsenal. I’ll say in the games so far, they have played a lot better than Arsenal. “Mikel Arteta is still tweaking; he is trying to fit people into the team. Write Manchester United off, because they are all over the shop. I think if Liverpool played Arsenal, Liverpool are the better team and would be favourites going into that game.”

Pennant may have a point about Manchester United, who have scored only six points from a possible twelve. Moreover, their performances do not warrant a shoutout among the ‘title challengers’ as showcased in their last game against Arsenal at the Emirates, and those two fortunate wins over Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

On the other hand, Liverpool have shown resilience in their three wins, especially against Bournemouth and Newcastle United. In those clashes, the Reds went a man down but managed to score crucial goals each time and take three points.

Arsenal have not been at their brightest yet. However, Arteta’s side have shown they are managing well below their capable power, and possibly, after the break, they can start putting in some big performances. Their win over Manchester United will boost their confidence, and the manager will hope to keep pushing from here on.
