Jaap Stam convinced Manchester United will sign Frenkie de Jong

Jaap Stam is convinced Manchester United will sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona this summer, claiming “it’s just a money issue now”.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion, as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Jaap Stam had his say on the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga. The Dutch legend has claimed that his compatriot will arrive at Old Trafford from FC Barcelona before the summer transfer window shuts down.

The Frenkie de Jong transfer saga has engulfed the summer transfer window thus far. Barcelona and Manchester United have been the protagonists, apart from the player himself, with Chelsea recently emerging as another candidate to secure the services of the Dutch midfielder this month.

The 25-year-old does not want to leave Barcelona as he is representing his dream club. At the same time, de Jong is also liable to receive a handy sum in deferred wages, which might be another motivating factor for him to remain at Camp Nou amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.

According to recent reports, the Red Devils have taken a back seat, with Chelsea leading the race to sign the Barcelona midfielder. But Manchester United legend Jaap Stam believes de Jong will join his former club before the summer transfer window shuts down, suggesting the “money issue” is the only stumbling block.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League season opener against Brighton & Hove Albion, Stam said, “My feeling is that Frenkie de Jong will come here [to Old Trafford]. At Manchester United, they know for a long time that Frenkie de Jong wants to come otherwise they would never push this long to get it done. It’s just a money issue for now.”

The Red Devils have left no stone unturned in their bid to sign Frenkie de Jong. But with the 25-year-old uninterested in joining Manchester United, a summer move to Old Trafford will unlikely see the light of day for the Barcelona midfielder, even though Jaap Stam does not believe that is the case.

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot has emerged as Manchester United’s alternative to de Jong this week, with the two clubs already agreeing to a transfer fee. As for de Jong, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the Dutchman, with Barcelona desperate to cash in on him this month.
