Inter Milan chief Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed the interest in Romelu Lukaku but admits the move is far from complete amid some ‘difficulties’.

The Romelu Lukaku saga rumbles on, with the striker getting closer than ever to leaving Chelsea for a second time. 2021/22 was not the best of seasons for the Belgian international, who may have been forgiven, had it not been for the nine-figure sum he cost Chelsea.

After an underwhelming season, Lukaku is open to re-joining Inter Milan again. The Serie A giants are keen on bringing the Belgian back to San Siro and remain in talks with Chelsea over a potential loan move for the striker.

Chelsea have already rejected Inter’s opening offer and are reportedly holding out for a considerable loan fee plus bonuses. The Londoners also want the Serie A giants to take over Lukaku’s entire salary; hence, the deal may be facing some ‘difficulties’ per Inter chief Giuseppe Marotta.

The top executive has been speaking to the media, and his comments regarding the Lukaku situation appeared on Football Italia. The Inter Milan CEO suggested there is still a long way to go before the deal is completed and admitted there are plenty of ‘difficulties’ so far.

Marotta said, “It’s a feasible path, but there are some difficulties, and we need to evaluate whether there’s a chance to make it. We won’t announce Lukaku’s return today. Lukaku and Dybala are our targets, but we need to consider financial issues.”

“We are in talks with these two players, and we’ll be happy if we sign them. If not, we’ll consider different targets. The single player is not important, what matters is the group, and this is already a solid team.”

Meanwhile, Marotta also addressed the idea of the new strikers such as Lukaku and Dybala coming in a while, suggesting Lautaro Martinez remains firmly in their plans.

He continued, “We have our target: make a capital gain from transfers and reduce the wage bill. It’s in our interest to keep a strong team because this is the history of this club. We believe Lautaro is fundamental to pursuing these objectives.”

Inter Milan are in financial trouble, preventing them from spending freely. The Serie A giants want several players to bolster their squad after narrowly missing out on the Scudetto. However, they will have to play things out smartly enough to accommodate new signings and their wages while balancing their books, including Chelsea forward Lukaku.
