Manchester United legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane have given their verdict on where this season’s English Premier League title will end up.
Manchester United legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane have been part of several Red Devils’ sides that have won the English Premier League in the past. Among the finest to ever do it, they are familiar with what it takes to secure the biggest prize in English football.
Manchester has often featured in title races over the years, but unfortunately for the former Manchester United duo, the blue half now holds sway. Pep Guardiola has created a monster of a team that keeps raising the bar needed to win the competition.
To add further fuel to the fire, the only team that has given Manchester City a run for their money in recent seasons is Liverpool. Both sides continue to inspire each other to reach new heights, leaving other teams trailing in their wake. It is little surprise that this season’s title will also end up either at the Etihad or Anfield.
The Manchester United legends are caught between a rock and a hard place regarding the two teams and have now given their verdict on the title race. As reported by Liverpool Echo, both Neville and Keane have shared their thoughts on where the trophy will end up come May.
Neville has played the Devil’s advocate and passed on picking a clear favourite. He believes the race will go to the last day of the campaign, setting up a thrilling finale for the 2021/22 Premier League season. “I think it’ll go to the final day. Man City and Liverpool are proven top teams, going at each other for years now,” he said.
Curiously enough, Manchester City will face Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on the last day. With Philippe Coutinho also in the mix, we could be in for a grandstand finale with redemption on the line for the Villa duo. It is fair to say that such last day drama could be needed to round off the season.
Unlike Neville, Keane has a clear favourite and believes Manchester City will just about edge the title. While that could certainly prove to be the case, it remains to be seen just how the title race unfolds. “I think it’ll be close but the quality City have I think they’ll just edge it,” Keane said.
As things stand, Manchester City lead Liverpool by six points, following their derby demolition of Manchester United, having played a game more. Curiously enough, both sides have their destiny in their own hands, given that they face off at the Etihad later this season. Whichever team wins all of their remaining games in the league will be guaranteed the title this season.
