Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher reveal what Arsenal are missing after defeat to Newcastle United

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have had their say on what they feel Arsenal lack on the back of the defeat against Newcastle United.

Arsenal suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Newcastle on Sunday. The defeat ended their unbeaten run in the Premier League. And, on the back of it, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have had their say on what the Gunners lack and what kind of business they need to do in the winter.

Both former footballers feel the Gunners need to add a few players to the mix in the winter to have a chance of winning the league. And, their opinions have come on the back of the Gunners’ defeat to the Magpies.

Arsenal dominated the ball and created quite a few chances. But, they failed to take enough shots on target. As a result, the Magpies were always in the game and they managed to find the back of the net in the 64th minute thanks to Anthony Gordon.

The goal was subject to three VAR checks, but it still stood. The decision has created a lot of controversies, and the results cannot be undone. And, on the back of it, Liverpool icon Carragher has highlighted the fact he feels this is not the Arsenal team that was going all out attack last season. They are not as fluid going forward.

Carragher feels the Gunners do not have the kind of striker and goalkeeper that a team needs to win the league. He feels they need a world-class number nine. While they have replaced Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya, the Liverpool legend feels Raya is not the right choice for them in goal. In simple terms, the North London club needs to strengthen their squad in both boxes if they want to win the league.

Carragher to Sky Sports: “I feel like I’m watching a different team They’re more solid defensively, but they’re not as fluid and they’re creating as many chances. Have Arsenal got a centre-forward and a goalkeeper who can win you the league? I don’t think they have. When you think of vital positions where teams win leagues, it’s in both boxes.”

“It wasn’t a mistake as such to replace Aaron Ramsdale, as Ramsdale wasn’t going to win you the league. But the guy he’s chosen right now to come in is absolutely all over the place. Don’t let it get lost in all the VAR stuff of the Arsenal goalkeeper again making another mistake. This is now a massive problem for Mikel Arteta.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville also had similar opinions after Arsenal’s defeat to the Magpies. Neville feels they need a new striker, the centre-froward position is a problem for them. He feels Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah are two quality strikers but they are not good enough to be the first choice at Arsenal.

Neville said, “In the games I have watched Arsenal this season, centre-forward has been a problem. Arsenal have to do some business in January – they are ending the game with (Leandro) Trossard in attack.”

The former Manchester United defender feels the Gunners need to do some business in the winter transfer window because they lack depth in attack. And, they end up having Leandro Trossard in attack towards the end of a game. So, it will be interesting to see if Arsenal enter the market for a striker in January.
