Gabriel Agbonlahor claims Tottenham need an upgrade on Dejan Kulusevski

Gabriel Agbonlahor has told Tottenham Hotspur to sign an attacker who can be an upgrade on Dejan Kulusevski next season.

During a segment on talkSPORT, as relayed by TBR Football, Gabriel Agbonlahor had a suggestion for Tottenham. The English pundit has told the North London club to enter the market to secure an upgrade on Dejan Kulusevski in the summer transfer window.

The former Aston Villa captain said, “Tottenham really need to upgrade Kulusevski. I watched him last season. He got substituted 10 times. He lacks pace. The amount of times I watched Spurs trying to counterattack on that right-hand side, he slows it down, everyone gets back, and it ruins the counterattack. They need an upgrade on Kulusevski.”

How has Dejan Kulusevski fared at Tottenham?

Dejan Kulusevski has blown hot and cold since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Juventus. The North London club initially completed a loan move for the Swede in January 2022 before sealing a permanent transfer 18 months later. However, while he showed positive signs during the loan stint, he has been inconsistent in the last 12 months.

While Kulusevski amassed nearly 3,000 minutes of game time across 39 appearances in all competitions, he managed only eight goals and three assists. So, Agbonlahor’s statement makes sense, considering his assessment of the Swedish attacker’s pace or the lack thereof. The player’s £140,000-a-week wages also render the tally underwhelming.

Will Tottenham sell?

Dejan Kulusevski does not have a shortage of suitors pursuing his signature in the summer transfer window, and a return to Serie A might be on the cards. Recent reports have linked the 24-year-old versatile attacker with Napoli, with the Partenopei keen on reinforcing the offensive department to return to the summit of Italian football.

However, it is unclear if Tottenham will be open to cashing in on the Swedish international in the summer transfer window. The North London giants are scouring the market for a wide attacker, with recent reports linking them with Federico Chiesa.

As for Kulusevski, he must make his mark in the coming weeks to ensure he remains with Tottenham Hotspur beyond the summer transfer window. However, parting ways with the 24-year-old Swede might be a sensible decision by the North London outfit.
