Hungarian goalkeeper Denes Dibusz has compared compatriot Dominik Szoboszlai to Lionel Messi after he helped seal a memorable qualifying campaign.
Lionel Messi has made such a mark on football that players are sometimes compared to a one-off performance with the Argentine superstar, the latest being Dominik Szoboszlai. No player has come close to matching the former Barcelona star regarding his consistency and overall impact week in and week out.
Hungarian goalkeeper Denes Dibusz has now suggested compatriot Dominik Szoboszlai is similar to “Messi at his best” after an influential performance against Montenegro. The hosts trailed in that game, but Szoboszlai put in a masterclass of a performance and had a hand in all three of their goals.
After the game, he celebrated with the Hungary fans and even had a shot of their traditional drink, the palinka, as his team qualified for UEFA Euro 2024. Since being named captain of the national side, they have not lost a single game.
Now, teammate and goalkeeper Dibusz has compared Szoboszlai to the formidable Messi after his latest exploits on the pitch. His comments on Index via Daily Mirror explained certain things about the Liverpool man.
🇭🇺 After taking his shot of pálinka, Dominik Szoboszlai also led the crowd chants celebrating with the Hungarian fans today.
Hungary still remain unbeaten with him as captain in a streak that now stretches 12 games – the longest run in European international football.

Dibusz said, “You have the same feeling about him as when Lionel Messi was at his best in Barcelona a few years ago. When he made up his mind, he went down the field and scored. He is a player of an incredible level and a great leader, who is able to lead the team on the field and add something extra to his game that draws the others along, and is also effective.”
“After the Bulgaria match, I think he was also a little frustrated that despite his chances, he didn’t manage to score. I think you can be satisfied with your finishes and performance today.”
Szoboszlai joined Liverpool during the summer and has made an instant impact for Jurgen Klopp’s side. He has been one of their key performers, and there is a belief he will find his consistency in scoring for the club as he does with the national side.
Some experts even suggested that he was one of the best players in the Premier League. So far, Szoboszlai has not disappointed and has plenty of room to improve. Still only 22, the Hungarian has a long, promising future ahead as Liverpool fans will hope he turns into a superstar, like “Messi at his best” in those upcoming seasons.
