Barcelona are actively seeking to secure the permanent signing of 29-year-old Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo ahead of next season.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are quite happy with the performances of Joao Cancelo who is currently on loan at the Spanish club. They want to sign him permanently and are expected to push hard for his signatures in the summer.
Cancelo went from strength to strength after joining Manchester City in the summer of 2019 from Juventus. The Portuguese international became one of the best-attacking full-backs in the world under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.
He helped them win numerous trophies and was an integral part of their first team. But, things started to take a turn last season as he found himself on the bench at City. The 29-year-old was no longer on good terms with their manager.
As a result, he had to spend the second half of last season at Bayern Munich. Even though he returned in the summer, there was no future for him at the Manchester-based club. So, they ended up sending him out on loan at Barcelona.
While the Catalan giants were ready to sign him on loan with an option/obligation to buy, they couldn’t afford anything apart from a straightforward loan. Since joining the Spanish giants, the Portuguese international has managed to revive himself.
He has featured in 25 matches and has contributed towards six goals. The Catalan giants are quite happy with his performances and would love to have him in their ranks beyond the summer.
They feel he could play a big part in their rebuild and that he is an ideal fit for their style of play. The Spanish giants’ sporting director Deco recently talked about negotiating with City for the services of the former Juventus full-backs.
While the former Barcelona legend is aware that a potential permanent transfer will depend on many factors, he has assured the fans that they will go all out for his signatures. The Catalan giants will not only look to sign Cancelo on a permanent basis, they will look to do the same for Joao Felix.
