Real Madrid defender David Alaba has commented on speculations linking his former Bayern Munich teammate Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona.

Speaking during an interview with BILD (h/t AS), Real Madrid superstar David Alaba has had his say on the rumours of his ex-Bayern Munich teammate, Robert Lewandowski, potentially signing for Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

Alaba arrived in La Liga last summer, signing for Real Madrid on a Bosman deal after his contract with Bayern Munich had run down. And his ex-teammate Lewandowski could follow suit and move to Spain later this year as negotiations over a new deal have not progressed according to plans.

Lewandowski is seeking a long-term contract, which Bayern have been reluctant to offer so far. It has opened up a window of opportunity for interested clubs, including Barcelona, to swoop in and sign the 33-year-old, with his current deal expiring in a little over twelve months.

Real Madrid have been linked with Lewandowski in the past. But their focus this summer has been on Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. However, their rivals Barcelona have emerged as one of the strongest suitors of the Polish international.

Indeed, the Blaugrana are in the market for a new marquee goalscorer ahead of the 2022/23 season. Having spent much time chasing Haaland, Barcelona have shifted their focus towards Lewandowski, who they believe is a more gettable target for the club in their current situation.

There have been rumours of a contract offer being made as negotiations have been held between Lewandowski’s agent and Barcelona. And now, Alaba, who spent seven years at Bayern Munich playing alongside the Poland captain, has expressed his thoughts on the possibility of seeing him join a direct rival.

“Whatever he decides, I’m sure it will be the right thing to do. What I can say for sure: is that no defender would like to play against him,” the Real Madrid defensive mainstay said on the Barcelona target.

Lewandowski has enjoyed another prolific campaign in 2021/22, having plundered 47 goals in just 42 matches in all competitions. So it should not come as a surprise that Bayern Munich are reluctant to let their superstar leave in the summer and are planning on holding talks to convince him to stay put at the Allianz Arena. It remains to be seen if Barcelona can get their man come summer.
