Kalvin Phillips has had a difficult time since his move to Manchester City, and Darren Bent has urged Liverpool to sign him.

Kalvin Phillips has struggled for regular game time, and former Premier League striker Darren Bent, during an appearance on talkSPORT, has now urged Liverpool to sign the Manchester City outcast.

Liverpool need to bring in a quality defensive midfielder and Phillips could prove to be a useful option. The £150,000-a-week midfielder is clearly struggling at Manchester City, and a move away from the club would be ideal for him.

Bent said, “I think Kalvin Phillips would have been disciplined enough to just sit there and know his role [if Liverpool signed him]. He’s a good player, he’s not going to make them weaker. He could make them stronger because Mac Allister could then move into his natural position, although I really like Curtis Jones, I think he’s doing a great job.”

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the country, and the opportunity to join them can be hard to turn down. The Reds sanctioned the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho this past summer, and they have not been able to bring in a quality defensive midfielder.

Although they signed Wataru Endo, the Reds need to bring in a ball-winning midfielder of higher quality. Phillips could be the ideal partner for Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister if he can regain his form and confidence. He was regarded as one of the finest midfielders in the league during his time at Leeds United and used to be a key player for club and country.

Regular football at Liverpool could help him regain his sharpness, and it remains to be seen whether the Reds decide to make a move for him. Given his situation at Manchester City, it is fair to assume that he could be available for a reasonable price. It will be interesting to see if Manchester City are ready to let him join a Premier League rival.

The Premier League champions will not want to weaken their squad midway through the campaign. So, it is fair to assume that any transfer would have to wait until the summer transfer window.

Phillips will probably be desperate to secure a move in January so that he can stake a claim in the England starting lineup for the upcoming European Championships. A world-class manager like Jurgen Klopp could help him get back to his best and get his career back on track once again.
