Danny Simpson believes Manchester United should be part of the running for Sandro Tonali should the midfielder leave in the summer.
Sandro Tonali became the big talking point on deadline day following surprise links to Arsenal. While those reports linking the Newcastle United midfielder with a switch to the Emirates were refuted almost immediately, it might have opened the doors for a summer move.
Arsenal and Chelsea are part of the race to sign Tonali, should he become available ahead of the summer, and none of those clubs would want to miss out on a player of Tonali’s quality. However, signing him from Newcastle United will provide a challenge, given that they are likely to demand £100 million or more for their mainstay.
Arsenal and Chelsea will be in a position to pay big if necessary, but Eddie Howe’s recent comments have stated that Sandro Tonali is happy and settled at St. James’ Park. However, there are serious doubts whether the club can retain players like the Italian international, especially if they fail to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, recently opened up on the Arsenal links, and while he refused to fuel speculation, the representative did hint at evaluating the future in the summer months. Should the Italian be made available, there is a big chance some of the top clubs will line up with offers.
On that topic, former Leicester City star and Premier League winner Danny Simpson has urged Manchester United to be part of the race to sign Sandro Tonali. The former defender’s comments appeared on Metro, where he stated the £100 million-rated Newcastle United star might be fit to play at Old Trafford under the pressure there.
Simpson said, “Obviously, he’s been a top player for Newcastle. He’s good on the ball, he’s strong, he’s physical, he’d be a brilliant player in there in many regards. Also, he’s the type of player that I think could wear a Man Utd shirt. It’s not easy, that, and I feel like he could wear it with the pressure and deal with it. He could definitely slot in there.”
Manchester United are in the market for new midfielders ahead of a summer rebuild. They are targeting some high-profile names such as Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, among others. The Red Devils appear serious about spending big to revamp the central positions, which is part of their long-term planning.
As for Sandro Tonali, as Simpson said, they must be part of the running for the £100 million-rated Newcastle United star. Tonali brings experience and know-how to the position better than most of the names in the league. However, much will depend on which other clubs are in the mix, but for Old Trafford, the Italian international could prove to be a shrewd signing in more ways than one.
