Manchester United are going through a tough period under Erik ten Hag, and they crashed to a humiliating defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has urged Manchester United to sack Erik ten Hag to arrest the club’s further decline.

Murphy wrote on Daily Mail, “The fact Bournemouth won at Old Trafford and no one is surprised tells you everything you need to know about Manchester United under Erik ten Hag. If United want to dine at English football’s top table again, Ten Hag is not the manager to take them there.”

“United just cannot compete with City, Liverpool and Arsenal with the players they have under Ten Hag. I don’t see a team that’s progressing after a good first season. I see one that’s regressing and I don’t see how that will change with Ten Hag in charge.”

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United are willing to call time on the Dutchman’s career. They have been quite poor this season, and Manchester United could easily miss out on Champions League football next season if things do not change soon.

Erik ten Hag was backed significantly during the summer transfer window, but the Dutchman has failed to get the best out of his players. Manchester United have been outplayed quite often this season and with the resources and quality at their disposal, they should be performing far better.

Manchester United have been linked with managers like Ruben Amorim in recent weeks. It will be interesting to see if the club hierarchy is willing to terminate the contract of the Dutch manager and appoint Amorim as his replacement.

Manchester United showed tremendous improvement under ten Hag last season, and they managed to win a domestic trophy as well. They were expected to challenge for the league title this season, but the Dutchman has failed to deliver. It remains to be seen whether the club will be patient with him and give him another opportunity to get his team back on track.

There is no doubt that several Manchester United players have underperformed this season. The summer signings are yet to work out either. Ten Hag is likely to shoulder all the blame if Manchester United fail this season, but the players certainly need to step up and do better.
