Chelsea continued consolidating their place in the table as they enjoyed a narrow, yet comfortable 1-0 win over Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Blues dominated the proceedings for much of the match, but had just a single goal to show for their efforts. Marcos Alonso’s sublime long-range free-kick was ultimately the difference as he curled the dead ball around the Southampton wall and past Fraser Forster.
And fans were in awe of the Spaniard’s effort, while also hailing his overall impact in the game, after the match drew to a close.
After Eden Hazard was fouled by Yoshida, Willian seemed about ready to take it but Marcos Alonso steps up and buries the free kick. Shades of David Luiz at Anfield. 1-0. #CFC pic.twitter.com/3NdgGhrxHA

With a goal every 5 Games for Chelsea, Marcos Alonso has a better scoring record than Fernando Torres at the club…

Alonso has won us 6 points this season. We would be so far down in the league if it wasn’t for him. World class

Alonso’s technique with a free kick is awesome. The power, the precision and the curl is lit but he can’t cross the ball for his life, something that involves the very same set of techniques. Weird

Tiemoue Bakayoko was solid once again, and Chelsea fan recognised the improvement in his performances in recent games.
I must admit, Bakayoko is slowly becoming what Chelsea fans are expecting from him when we first signed him, although the team haven’t performed the best recently, he has improved a lot.
We all hope you keep it up and show the critics how good you really are! pic.twitter.com/lyOhsTZk1b

that’s exactly what you want from your midfielder when you’re in total control of the game.

I know I’ve been very critical of Bakayoko because having watched many Chelsea sides for years, I demand top performances from those wearing that shirt. But against Southampton, he was breaking the lines well and put in a 7/10. More performances like that Timoué

Bakayoko had improved in the last two games he has played even though some of you cant see it. I just hope he can keep it up like that

Bakayoko rewarding Conte’s faith in him with another solid performance. Meanwhile, Mourinho has permanently relegated Mkhitaryan to United’s youth team because he had some few bad games
— sebastían.o (@NathansAke) December 16, 2017
Bakayoko in a 2 man midfield always plays well cos he sits and take turns with Kante to attack and that’s what he played at Monaco. B2b in a 3 man midfield and he’s learning but reactionary fans
