Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has refused to comment on his future amid interest from FC Barcelona.
Chelsea are bracing themselves for a tough summer ahead, with the Premier League giants tipped to lose three of their crucial defensive assets in Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen on a free transfer.
Christensen has been closely linked with a move to Barcelona, and as per widespread reports, he could be joined by Azpilicueta, who is being targeted by the Blaugrana due to his calm demeanour and leadership qualities at the back.
Azpilicueta, though, has refused to comment on his future at Chelsea when interacting with the media during a press conference on Wednesday. The defender believes it is not the ideal time to speculate about his future whilst stating his desire to help Chelsea out from their precarious situation.
“This is not the time or place to talk about the future. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the pandemic and with Chelsea’s current situation it’s that we have to live the day to day, live the moment. Now is the time to focus on the selection,” said Azpilicueta, as quoted by Goal.
“At Chelsea we are living in a time of great uncertainty, but the players and the coaching staff can only do one thing, which is to prepare as best as possible for the matches. In fact, after the sale of the club was announced, we achieved good results. The rest is not in our hands,” he added.
Azpilicueta’s comments come just a week after reports surfaced on his potential extension at Stamford Bridge. As things currently stand, the Blues are ineligible to hold contract talks with the Spaniard, but they could be in a position to do so if they can sort out their ownership issues and let go of the shackles of Roman Abramovich.
In the meantime, Azpilicueta will focus on his international duty with Spain. He is expected to be in action in the upcoming friendlies against Albania and Iceland before he returns to Stamford Bridge at the start of April, with Chelsea set to resume their campaign against Brentford on April 2.
