Caoimhin Kelleher has revealed his desire to leave Liverpool at the next possible opportunity as he feels his career at the club is finished.
Liverpool might be planning on a goalkeeping overhaul next summer, with the chance of both their current keepers leaving high. Alisson Becker remains a formidable presence between the sticks, while Caoimhin Kelleher has more than proved his worth as an able deputy.
Sticking with the Ireland international, Kelleher wanted to quit this summer for a new role elsewhere where he can play as the first-choice keeper. Last season, as Alisson missed several games, the 25-year-old first-team ace proved his worth by playing 26 times under Jurgen Klopp.
However, with Alisson back in the mix, the chances of Kelleher playing that many games are remote, and this is why he wanted a new challenge. Celtic were keen on the Irish star and might have made a bid, although it may be different from Liverpool’s liking and valuation.
Kelleher has now revealed his desire to leave the club on a permanent basis in his comments to the media, as relayed by Sky Sports. The keeper also cites the idea of the club bringing in another goalkeeper this summer, which more than confirms their desire to move in another direction as the 25-year-old first-team ace.
Kelleher said, “I made it clear in the last few years that I want to go somewhere and be a number one. The club has made that decision to get a goalkeeper (Mamardashvili) which makes it look like they’ve made a decision to go in another direction. Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. It’s not always in my hands to fully make the decision. My ambition is clear. I’m good enough and I want to go and play week in, week out.”
Liverpool signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia in a huge deal, although they decided to let the player stay with the Spanish side on loan for one season. While many consider the Georgian keeper as a direct replacement for Alisson, should the Brazilian stay put, the current Valencia stopper will certainly take Kelleher’s spot.
As for the claim that Liverpool rejected offers, they did turn down a late bid from Nottingham Forest and might have done the same with many other interested sides like Celtic. Kelleher has proved he can play well in the Premier League and might get his move next summer or even in January.
