Denmark international Morten Hjulmand has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months.
The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has done quite well at Sporting CP and his performances have attracted the attention of the big clubs. Denmark manager Brian Riemer has fuelled further speculation about his future by stating that the midfielder could end up at Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur.
Riemer feels that the midfielder will end up at a top Premier League club at some point in his career. It will be interesting to see if these clubs decide to make a move for him in the near future. There is no doubt that he is a quality defensive midfielder who will help them improve.
Riemer said (h/t SportWitness): “I spent two years in the Premier League and I think he has the necessary qualities to play for the six/seven best clubs in the English league. Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City… At a certain point in his career, I believe he will arrive at one of these teams.
AD“His character, his leadership, his personality, his communication are not very common in today’s football, and I was at many clubs, in Copenhagen, Brentford, Anderlecht. It reminds us of the defensive midfielders of the past, who controlled the entire game, who led the teams, you don’t see that much nowadays. It’s something rare what Hjulmand has. I’m a big fan of his, I think we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg with Hjulmand.”
Arsenal could certainly use more depth in the midfield unit and Hjulmand would be an upgrade on players like Thomas Partey and Jorginho. At Tottenham, he could compete with Yves Bissouma for the starting spot.
Meanwhile, Liverpool tried to sign a defensive midfielder at the start of the season and they need to bring in an upgrade on Wataru Endo. As far as Manchester United are concerned, Casemiro is in the twilight stages of his career and the Brazilian will have to be replaced in the near future.
At Manchester City, they have a world-class defensive midfielder like Rodri, but the Spanish international needs some cover. The defending champions need to sign another quality defensive midfielder so that they can rotate the Spaniard and rest him ahead of key matches.
The Sporting CP star would be a quality acquisition, but he is unlikely to be a cheap one. He has a £67 million release clause in his contract and it will be interesting to see if the English clubs are willing to pay up.
