Bradley Barcola plays down Mohamed Salah comparisons, wants a Liverpool legacy

Former Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola has opened up on his big-money move to Liverpool and comparisons to Mohamed Salah.

Bradley Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported fee of £123 million this summer following Mohamed Salah’s departure. However, the 24-year-old has insisted he is determined to forge his own legacy at Liverpool rather than be measured against the Egyptian’s achievements.

Barcola has endured a mixed start to life in England, with his performances yet to consistently justify the substantial investment. Speaking to Sky Sports, Barcola acknowledged that he still has considerable room for improvement but believes his understanding with his new teammates is developing steadily.

“No, I don’t think I’m at my best yet,” Barcola said, before adding, “You still haven’t seen the best version of me.”

He added that Liverpool’s attacking players were learning how to make better use of his strengths, expressing confidence that their understanding would continue to improve.

Barcola’s start was slow, as he went through his first 10 appearances for club and country without scoring or providing an assist since moving to England. However, a hat-trick in Liverpool’s emphatic Champions League victory over LASK offered a timely response, followed by assists in consecutive wins against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

Although he failed to register a goal contribution in Liverpool’s defeat to Arsenal, his movement and direct running caused problems for the visitors, providing further signs of his potential.

Across 12 appearances for Liverpool, Barcola has accumulated 713 minutes and contributed to five goals. He has featured on both wings but has looked more dangerous when deployed on the left, his preferred position.

The sizeable transfer fee has inevitably brought scrutiny, and Barcola faces a particular challenge, as he has been signed following Salah’s departure. The Egyptian winger became one of Liverpool’s greatest players, delivering major trophies and establishing himself as a defining figure of the club’s modern era.

Bradley Barcola unfazed by price tag and Salah comparisons

Replacing that influence was never going to be straightforward, but Barcola has rejected the idea that he needs to become the next Salah.

“First of all, I wasn’t the one who decided the transfer fee,” he explained, before adding, “So that’s not been my problem.”

Barcola also addressed comparisons with the former Liverpool forward.

“He’s a legend here. A huge one. He’s done big things here and for that I have an enormous respect for him. But it’s not pressure for me at all. I’m not Mohamed Salah, so I’m going to try to contribute whatever I can to the club and make my own mark on its history. I don’t feel any pressure about that.”

Liverpool still have work to do if they are to compete consistently with the Premier League’s leading sides, and Barcola will be expected to play a central role in their efforts to close the gap.

For now, the Frenchman is focused on finding his best form and building chemistry with his new teammates. Rather than attempting to replicate Salah’s achievements, he wants to deliver success on his own terms and eventually establish a legacy of his own at Anfield.
