Borussia Dortmund director confirms desire to sign Jadon Sancho

Borussia Dortmund director Sebastian Kehl confirmed the desire to keep Jadon Sancho but remained coy on things to come with his transfer.

Jadon Sancho is a different player from the one that played under Erik ten Hag. After a difficult first part of the season that saw the 24-year-old Manchester United player fall out with the Dutch manager and subsequently banished from first-team activities, the winger has brought his game back on track with a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho made the switch in January, and with his loan move back to Dortmund, it seemed very logical, given how comfortable he was at the German side. He has proven some of his doubters wrong and certainly did that with a brilliant performance against PSG in the Champions League semifinal first leg last week.

Incidentally, Dortmund have qualified for next season’s Champions League despite being fifth, as Germany and Italy were the recipients of fifth place in the competition. That said, they may have some clarity on next season’s finances, which could also be boosted if they reach the final of the current edition.

Dortmund has been talking about open discussions with various clubs to keep some of their on-loan players for a long time. That includes talks for Jadon Sancho with Manchester United and Ian Maatsen with Chelsea in the coming period.

Director Sebastian Kehl confirmed the desire to keep Sancho beyond his current loan spell and insisted Dortmund will try everything to ensure that happens. He also sided with caution, stating that Manchester United has not made their stance on the winger clear, as his comments appeared on Fabrizio Romano’s post on X.

Kehl said, “We will try everything to keep Jadon Sancho here”.

“But Manchester United also sees how well he is playing at the moment. Maybe they also want to sell him for profit or bring him back… we will see”.

Manchester United paid a hefty price back in 2021 to prise away the winger from Dortmund. Hence, there were suggestions the Red Devils would want a hefty price for the 24-year-old player. There have been suggestions that they are also open to letting him leave on loan, but that would again mean taking in the financial losses with the player’s valuations and wages.

Dortmund are also not willing to pay beyond a specific limit, which could have a telling effect on their transfer plans for the 24-year-old Manchester United player. In any case, the two clubs will now sit and discuss the finer details, with Kehl seemingly hoping he will be able to keep Sancho for a long to come.
