Antonio Rudiger addresses Chelsea exit rumours

Antonio Rudiger is flattered by the interest in him, particularly from Bayern Munich, but insists he remains focused on the season with Chelsea.

Once marginalised under Frank Lampard, Antonio Rudiger has come back into the fold, rather strongly since Thomas Tuchel took over as Chelsea manager. The Germany international has become a key component of the club’s defence, helping them win the Champions League last season while keeping the side on top of the current league table.

Rudiger’s long-term future, however, is nowhere near secure, with his contract expiring at the end of the current season. The progress on renewal has been slow, while plenty of big European sides are already circling for the German’s signature.

The 28-year-old reportedly has massive offers from Juventus and Bayern Munich on the table, with both clubs ready to pay him huge wages. If the figures reported in the media are accurate, Rudiger will become one of the highest-paid defenders in world football.

As he could be available on a free transfer next summer, Real Madrid are also heavily involved in the race to sign him. The Spanish side are yet to properly fill the void left by Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, who left the club during the summer.

These clubs could start negotiating with Rudiger as early as January, and he could sign a pre-contract agreement. Chelsea are yet to offer or match these massive offers, but there could be clarity in the coming months.

Rudiger took time to address these rumours. The Mirror featured his comments as the player spoke to the media while away with the German national side. From what he said, the defender seems flattered by the interest, particularly from Bayern Munich.

Rudiger said, “Of course [Bayern’s interest] honours me and proves that I’ve been doing things right. But I don’t let myself be distracted. I have an obligation to my club to perform well. I have to prove myself every game and not let myself be distracted by rumours. I make my decisions for myself. They don’t depend on anyone. I feel good where I am.”

From those comments, it does seem like Rudiger would not mind continuing his career at Bayern Munich. However, he still has a big role in Chelsea’s season as the club competes on all fronts. It certainly will be a huge loss for Tuchel if the defender decides to leave, especially on a free transfer.
