Five things we learned from Matchday 26 of La Liga 2025/26

Matchday action in La Liga once again reshaped the narrative at both ends of the table, with the title race taking a decisive turn and the battle for European places intensifying.

From standout individual brilliance to late drama and costly slip-ups, the weekend served as a reminder of how quickly momentum can shift in La Liga at this stage of the season. Barcelona strengthened their grip on the summit with a dominant display, while Real Madrid saw their title hopes take another significant hit.

Atletico Madrid kept themselves firmly in the top-four picture, and elsewhere, derby drama and relegation struggles ensured there was no shortage of storylines. The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at five key takeaways from the latest round of fixtures.

Yamal steals the spotlight against Villarreal

Barcelona went four points clear at the top of the table by defeating top-four hopefuls Villarreal (4-1) without much trouble, thanks to an exceptional hat-trick by their teenage superstar, Lamine Yamal. With the Catalan giants securing all three points, the pressure was now on Real Madrid, who would be in action later on.

Los Blancos crumbled under pressure, and now Hansi Flick’s team have enough breathing room at the top. Since the Yellow Submarine had won on three out of their last four visits to Barcelona, this was expected to be a very tricky affair for the defending champions. But Yamal had other ideas.

The 18-year-old bagged his first career hat-trick in a very crucial game in the context of the 2025/26 La Liga title race, and his treble included a brilliant solo goal, where he cut inside from the right and fired one straight into the top corner.

Julian Alvarez saves the day for Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid were on the verge of dropping points in La Liga for the 12th time, but an injury-time strike by Julian Alvarez saved the day for them. Thanks to that goal, they secured a 1-0 win over Real Oviedo and reclaimed the third position on the table.

After a rough patch in the league, Atletico Madrid have finally won consecutive games. While they are level on points with Villarreal, the Madrid-based outfit has a better goal difference. The Argentine international has been the go-to man for Simeone’s team throughout the ongoing campaign, and he once again stepped up and delivered.

While the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has scored better goals, this could end up being one of the most important strikes of the season, as Los Rojiblancos look to ensure a higher finish in La Liga.

Real Madrid’s La Liga title hopes suffer another major setback

Following their 1-0 defeat to Getafe, Real Madrid have now lost consecutive games in La Liga. From being two points clear at the top of the table, the Merengues are now four points behind rivals Barcelona. The title race has completely turned on its head in a matter of weeks.

The fact that this is the first time they have lost back-to-back league games since 2019 suggests all is not well at Real Madrid. Their defence was all over the place, and they simply could not make use of all the possession they had.

The team in white did create chances, but their frontline were not clinical enough. With Kylian Mbappe unavailable, their over-reliance on Vinicius Junior cost them big time. Now they are forced to play catch-up heading into the final phase of the 2025/26 La Liga season.

The Seville derby does not disappoint

Sevilla did wonders in the derby as they came from two goals behind to secure a point. Matias Almeyda was not on the sidelines as he served the second game of his seven-match touchline ban. However, his players made sure he was not missed.

Sevilla were completely outplayed by Real Betis in the first half, and they headed into the break trailing by two goals. However, Los Nervionenses did not give up and scripted an incredible comeback despite not having enough firepower in the final third.

Sevilla dominated the proceedings in the second half and made the most out of their chances, while Real Betis failed to cope with it and ended up dropping two valuable points in their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Martin Demichelis has a massive task at hand in La Liga

Martin Demichelis’s first match in charge of relegation-threatened RCD Mallorca did not go according to plan. He watched his team suffer a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad from the stands of Son Moix. A 1-0 defeat is normally not that bad a result for a team fighting for survival, but the fact that they could only manage one shot on target suggests the newly-appointed manager has a massive task at hand.

Real Sociedad secured a win without much trouble, and that certainly needs to change. Following that defeat, Mallorca have now lost four La Liga games in a row. Since they are only two points off safety and the majority of their games are against direct rivals in the race for survival, Demichelis knows what he needs to ensure they stay in the Spanish top flight beyond this season.
