Manchester United retain faith in Michael Carrick, hold exploratory talks to land Cesc Fabregas

Manchester United continue to back Michael Carrick, and yet they have not stopped short of assessing alternatives, including Cesc Fabregas.

According to TEAMtalk, Michael Carrick continues to retain the backing of Manchester United chiefs, and yet that has not halted the process of identifying the right replacement should they decide to part ways with the Englishman. Cesc Fabregas is high on their list alongside other names, with exploratory talks held with the Spaniard.

Manchester United’s surprise win over Roma in midweek did relieve Michael Carrick of some pressure, which has been accumulating in a run of nine games without a win. The Englishman still has a lot to prove to justify his stay in the dugout, as he must bring an instant improvement in fortunes as far as the league is concerned.

The Red Devils have one win in nine games in the Premier League as they prepare to face Aston Villa on Sunday. A win would be a major relief for Carrick, although another game without a win would certainly add to the pressure on the manager, with earlier reports suggesting he might have time until the international break.

However, that may not be the case, as Carrick reportedly has the club’s backing for the time being to continue in the role and try to change the fortunes on the pitch. Jason Wilcox appears to have the authority to decide on a potential managerial change, and while the club chief has decided to continue with Carrick, he has not stopped assessing other alternatives should the time come to make a change.

Cesc Fabregas among those under consideration

The backing of Carrick does not necessarily mean he is totally safe in his role at Manchester United, as results will certainly dictate the next outcome. Hence, while the club are eager to give Carrick time, they are already assessing other options in the market should the time come when they sack the Englishman, with Unai Emery seen as a dream target, although they are unlikely to sign the Spaniard.

Christopher Vivell reportedly prefers Julian Nagelsmann as his priority target, while the other club chiefs are reportedly leaning towards Cesc Fabregas. The Como boss has seen an immense rise in stature since taking over and progressing at the Serie A flyers, as Manchester United have reportedly held exploratory talks with the former Chelsea icon.

There are many big teams keeping tabs on Fabregas, although the Manchester United job might be the closest he could get in the current moment. Como, for their part, are not expected to let the Spaniard leave easily, as there would be a massive demand for a compensation fee. For now, Carrick remains in charge, but the situation could change in an instant if results continue to evade.
