Barcelona working on sealing 2028 move for Cesc Fabregas, face Arsenal, Chelsea threat

Barcelona could look at Cesc Fabregas as the successor to Hansi Flick, with a long play underway as Chelsea and Arsenal are also in the mix of a complex chase.

As reported by Fichajes, Barcelona could be interested in bringing in Cesc Fabregas in 2028 as a successor to Hansi Flick. In what appears to be a complex chase for the Como manager, the presence of Arsenal and Chelsea in the race for the Spanish coach could bring plenty of twists in the saga when the time comes.

Cesc Fabregas is a name echoing in the circles of top-tier football managers in Europe, and rightly so, as his Como side continues to make headlines. Having risen through the ranks at the Serie A club, the 39-year-old manager has helped the club come through the lower divisions to the top flight and is now flying high in the Champions League, all in a short span of time.

The Spaniard remains tied to Como until 2028, with the report claiming he may have a special release clause if clubs namely Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea come knocking for his signature. Fabregas featured for all three clubs in some capacity, as they are currently some of the top jobs in club football.

Chelsea had been linked with Fabregas before appointing Xabi Alonso as their new manager in the summer, but could keep tabs on him for the future. Arsenal had also been loosely linked with Fabregas, as some doubts over Mikel Arteta persisted before the latter won the Premier League title.

Barcelona enter a complex chase for Cesc Fabregas

Arsenal and Chelsea may have seen links before, and could even retain an interest in the idea that Fabregas might be open to taking over at either club if a chance arrives. However, at the moment, both clubs have established managers in Arteta and Alonso, with the former even signing a new deal until 2030 as a reward for winning the Premier League title.

Barcelona also view Fabregas as a successor to Hansi Flick, although the latter remains firmly settled in Catalonia. The Spanish giants are thinking long term, with the idea of chasing the 39-year-old Serie A manager in 2028, when his contract with Como expires, which also coincides with Flick coming to the end of his agreement, although that deal has an option to extend by another season.

The appeal of managing Barcelona, Fabregas’ boyhood club, may prove stronger than managing the likes of Arsenal or Chelsea. Either way, this is a long game, with no guarantees that either of those three managers will leave in 2028 nor the fact that Fabregas will carry the same reputation he does at the moment. However, going by his rise at Como, the 39-year-old does appear to have a bright future ahead in the top tier.
