David Moyes increasingly likely to leave Everton next summer

Veteran Scottish manager David Moyes is increasingly likely to leave Everton after the ongoing campaign.

According to a report by Football Insider, David Moyes looks set to leave Everton next summer as the Friedkin Group’s sale of the club stalls contract talks with the 63-year-old manager. Moyes is approaching the final months of his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.

Despite making an impressive impact since returning to Merseyside in 2025 (1.41 points per game after 70 matches), there has been little progress towards agreeing an extension. Moyes admitted before Everton’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea that discussions over his future had reached “a bit of a lull”.

The Scottish tactician has led them in nine games this term and has four wins, four draws and a defeat to his name. While the club have had a promising start, Moyes’ future remains up in the air.

Change in ownership could result in Moyes exit

The Merseyside club had held talks with the manager during the summer, but the Friedkin Group’s decision to put Everton up for sale has complicated the situation.

Everton’s performances under Moyes have strengthened the argument for a new contract. However, uncertainty over the ownership situation and his understood tensions with the current hierarchy raise questions about whether he will remain in charge.

A potential takeover could prove decisive. New owners often appoint their preferred manager, and Moyes’s contract situation would provide an exit opportunity without lengthy severance negotiations.

There is no certainty that a takeover will lead to the Scotsman’s exit, but the sale process has created a situation in which neither the manager nor the club can offer much clarity about what comes next.

Should Moyes leave next summer, he is unlikely to be short of potential opportunities. The veteran manager’s experience in the Premier League could attract interest from ambitious clubs seeking an established manager.

Celtic are among the clubs understood to be monitoring his situation as they consider their own managerial plans. Martin O’Neill’s future at Parkhead remains uncertain, with his contract also approaching expiry.

Moyes has an existing connection with Celtic, having represented the Scottish club during his playing career. That familiarity could appeal to the Scottish giants should they pursue a managerial change. With contract talks at an impasse and Celtic monitoring his availability, Moyes faces a decisive summer, one in which neither club nor manager can chart a clear course.
