Manchester United could replace Michael Carrick with former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, who is increasingly likely to pen a deal to manage the Red Devils.
Manchester United could be moving towards an agreement with Antonio Conte as pressure continues to mount on Michael Carrick following the club’s disappointing start to the new Premier League season. According to Tutto Mercato Web, the former Chelsea manager is “reaching an agreement” with Manchester United, who have struggled to get desired results under Carrick.
The report will offer encouragement to Manchester United supporters hoping for a change in the dugout, although the club’s hierarchy are not planning to dismiss their current head coach immediately.
Manchester United remain keen to give Carrick time to improve performances, but they are also understood to be assessing contingency plans should results fail to improve. Conte’s availability could make him an attractive option if the club eventually decide to change direction.
Carrick is struggling to get desired results
Carrick took charge midway through last season and made an impressive impact, guiding Manchester United to a top-four finish and helping them secure a return to the Champions League. The team’s performances convinced the hierarchy to hand him a two-year contract as permanent manager.
However, the Red Devils have struggled to deliver similar results this time around. While they have added more quality in the centre of the park, United have won just two out of their eight matches across all competitions.
The fact that they have only won one out of their six Premier League games has become a massive concern. Manchester United have already been knocked out of the EFL Cup and their failure to take down a 10-man Tottenham side last time out did them little good. While they are not looking to sack Carrick right away, the pressure has certainly started to build on him.
Conte to replace Carrick at Manchester United?
Conte could offer Manchester United an experienced alternative capable of delivering an immediate improvement. The Italian tactician has been without a managerial position since leaving Napoli in the summer, meaning he would be available to take charge right away.
The 57-year-old manager’s record in English football could strengthen his appeal. His spell at Tottenham did not deliver the sustained success many expected, but his time at Chelsea proved considerably more productive.
Conte led Chelsea to the Premier League title during his first season at Stamford Bridge and followed that achievement by winning the FA Cup. His experience of managing under pressure and competing for major honours could appeal to a Manchester United hierarchy desperate to restore the club’s standing among England’s elite.
