Manchester City will prioritise a move for Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany if Pep Guardiola departs from the Etihad this year.

According to a report by Football Insider, Vincent Kompany is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Citizens are scouring the market for a new manager heading into the summer amid uncertainties surrounding Pep Guardiola’s long-term future. So, the Bayern Munich head coach has emerged as a target for the Premier League club.

How has Vincent Kompany fared as a manager?

Vincent Kompany has established himself as one of the world’s most promising young coaches since entering the managerial world. One of the greatest defenders of his generation, the former Belgian international enjoyed a stellar career, particularly at the club level, where he won numerous trophies with Manchester City. His career ended at boyhood outfit Anderlecht, serving them as the player-manager before hanging up his boots.

The 39-year-old entered the coaching sphere in 2019 and has risen in stature in the last half a dozen years. Kompany’s stock soared after joining Burnley, with the Clarets playing an eye-catching brand of football in the EFL Championship. However, the former Manchester City captaindid not enjoy a happy return to the Premier League with Burnley, although he has seen his stock soar at Bayern Munich.

The former multi-time Premier League winner has already won the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, and the Bavarian giants are cruising towards another league title. So, it is hardly surprising that the Belgian tactician’s stock has soared, with Manchester City among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Manchester City return on the horizon?

Manchester City’s interest in Vincent Kompany is understandable. The Citizens are scouring the managerial market for a long-term successor to Pep Guardiola, as the former Barcelona manager faces an uncertain future at the Etihad beyond the 2025/26 season.

Several candidates, including Xabi Alonso, have thus emerged on Manchester City’s wishlist, with Kompany also a viable target. The latest report has suggested that the Premier League club will prioritise appointing the Bayern Munich boss as Guardiola’s successor if the former Barcelona manager calls time on his spell at the Etihad.

Recent reports have suggested that Guardiola has hand-picked Xabi Alonso as the next Manchester City manager. So, it will be interesting to see if Kompany can usurp Alonso in the shortlist of candidates to replace Guardiola.
