Chelsea prioritising Gareth Southgate as Enzo Maresca replacement

Chelsea are reportedly considering appointing Gareth Southgate as Enzo Maresca’s successor, as the former England boss could be a good fit.

According to Fichajes, Gareth Southgate’s name is gaining traction in the race for the Chelsea managerial hotseat. The sacking of Enzo Maresca will see the club accelerate their efforts to find a successor, as the former England boss is being mentioned as a key target in the story.

There’s been a lot going on over at Stamford Bridge, as the future of Enzo Maresca gained momentum over the last 24 hours. There have been speculation surrounding the Italian’s future amid recent links to taking over at Manchester City in the future.

Chelsea sacked Maresca earlier today, and now the club have accelerated efforts to find a suitable replacement. Many managerial names are being sounded out about a move, although the likes of Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi have been effectively ruled out for one reason or another.

Liam Rosenior is seen as a key contender, and his name has been mentioned a lot of late. The Strasbourg boss is an internal candidate after impressing in France, as Chelsea could consider him as Maresca’s replacement. However, a new name has been gaining traction, as Chelsea are now linked with former England boss Gareth Southgate.

Southgate brings plenty of experience to the table, and Chelsea might view it as a key element given how they want the squad managed from here on. He did take England to multiple World Cup campaigns, and the former Euro finalist could be a good fit for Chelsea if they are serious.

Gareth Southgate to Chelsea?

Southgate is out of a job since leaving England, and could be tempted by the prospect of signing for Chelsea. While overall favourite at the moment remains Rosenior, there could be an outside shout for the former Euro finalist to be part of Chelsea’s thinking.

Southgate was previously courted by the likes of Manchester United on numerous occasions, and now Chelsea might view his experience as a key driver in their chase. It remains to be seen who replaces Maresca at the helm, as well as whether Chelsea fans accept someone like Southgate as the ideal choice.
