Newcastle United expected to sack Paul Mitchell before Eddie Howe

Newcastle United are likely to dismiss Paul Mitchell over Eddie Howe if they come to the point of considering making changes.

According to Football Insider, Eddie Howe’s job at Newcastle United is safe for now, as the club are keen to back the manager. There are reports of a bust up between the Magpies boss and director Paul Mitchell, with the Tyneside outfit likely to part ways with the latter if they consider making changes in the background.

Eddie Howe over Paul Mitchell

Newcastle Untied had a turbulent summer window, where things did not go to plan. The Magpies had significant plans to strengthen their squad as well as manoeuvring through their PSR obligations, which led to the sale of a few promising stars like Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Andersen to balance their finances.

Meanwhile, the Magpies had an underwhelming transfer window, with Lloyd Kelly, Odysseas Vlachodimos and William Osula the only permanent signings. Lewis Hall also signed on permanently for Newcastle United from Chelsea following a loan obligation, but Eddie Howe could not bring in the desired names.

While they made an excellent start to the season, the defeat to Fulham was their first of the league campaign. Hence, there is confidence in Howe from the club chiefs, meaning the recent reports of a bust-up between the manager and director Paul Mitchell do not have an effect on Howe’s job at the club.

In fact, the report states that should the club heirarchy decide on making a change in the background, it could be that Mitchell gets the sack before Howe. Hence, the director, who only arrived this past summer, has come under fire following this reported bust-up between the pair, and while the club are not actively thinking about replacing him, he might be the first to go should any changes occur.

Howe-Mitchell bust-up

Widespread reports have suggested the underwhelming transfer window led to the dispute between the pair, mainly due to the failed pursuit of Marc Guehi. The defender was considered Howe’s primary target to strengthen the backline, as the Crystal Palace man could have bridged the gap to re-enter the top four at the end of the campaign.

On a side note, the bust-up between the pair must be resolved in the coming period, or else it will threaten to derail the season for reasons beyond matters on the pitch. Hence, this rift cannot continue for long, as the pair have to put their differences aside, and in the case that one has to leave, it might well be Mitchell for his ineffective role in the transfer window despite arriving this past summer.
