According to Football Insider, Chelsea could plot dramatic changes at the executive level and how things operate overall if good results continue to evade the first team. The Blues are coming at the back of another chaotic summer window, with the sole focus now on Chelsea co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.
Chelsea Sporting directors under fire
Chelsea had another chaotic summer, with fans now almost not able to predict the club’s next move. One of the baffling things about their business was their failure to land a top-draw striker despite spending well over a billion pounds since the new owners took over two years ago.
Moreover, many have called into question some of the decisions not only in terms of transfers but also at the executive level. Former midfielder Emmanuel Petit poked fun after they signed yet another winger in Jandon Sancho. At the same time, there were doubts about whether Enzo Maresca was the right choice to replace Mauricio Pochettino, especially after Maresca’s comments that ‘sometimes not winning is normal at Chelsea’.
Chelsea co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart were, in fact, the reason why Pochettino left the club, as they were critical to his sacking. They subsequently put all eggs in the basket of appointing an inexperienced manager in Maresca, especially for the targrts a big club like Chelsea seek to achieve.
However, the co-sporting directors Winstanley and Stewart are now under immense pressure to see their plans flourish. Should the players on the field and their manager, Maresca, fail to achieve results and the targets set before the season, the directors could lose their jobs.
Will Chelsea improve this season?
As things stand, Maresca has had an indifferent start to the campaign, where they have yet to win a game on home soil in the Premier League but have managed wins in each of their two away trips. Moreover, they are only second to Manchester City in terms of goals scored, but there are still questions about bringing a balance to the side.
Chelsea does have the potential to keep improving from their sixth-placed finish last season. Whether they are realistically targeting a top-four place remains to be seen, although they have a squad good enough to achieve that. However, there are still lingering doubts about whether they have the experience to mount a challenge for a Champions League place, as other teams will give them a good fight in that aspect.
