Manchester United approach Roberto De Zerbi to replace Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have reportedly contacted Roberto De Zerbi over the possibility of replacing Erik ten Hag with him.

According to a report by The Guardian, Roberto De Zerbi is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are mulling over replacing Erik ten Hag despite the win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final this past weekend. They have sounded out the 44-year-old over the possibility of taking over from the Dutchman ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Roberto De Zerbi has become one of the most highly-rated young managers in the world in the last few years. The Italian tactician cut his teeth at lower-league clubs in his homeland before rising in prominence during his spell with Palermo. However, his stock soared after he joined Sassuolo in 2018.

Since then, the 44-year-old has gone from strength to strength, making his mark during his stints with Sassuolo, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Brighton & Hove Albion. The latest spell came in England, with Brighton qualifying for the UEFA Europa League with a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season under his tutelage.

However, the Seagulls blew hot and cold this past season, with De Zerbi departing from the Amex Stadium due to differences over transfer strategy with Tony Bloom. He reportedly dreams of managing AC Milan and Barcelona. However, the former Sassuolo manager will unlikely land either job, although Manchester United might offer him a way back to the Premier League.

Manchester United’s interest in Roberto De Zerbi is understandable. Erik ten Hag is in a spot of bother at Old Trafford despite guiding the club to the FA Cup title this past weekend by beating Manchester City in the final. So, several managers are on Manchester United’s radar, with De Zerbi being one of the candidates.

The report has claimed that Manchester United have already sounded out Roberto De Zerbi’s entourage over the possibility of replacing Erik ten Hag with him. So, a summer move might be on the cards.

Recent reports have claimed that the 44-year-old Italian tactician is open to returning to the Premier League after leaving Brighton. It will be interesting to see if his next project comes with Manchester United.
