Thomas Tuchel leads race to become Manchester United manager

Thomas Tuchel is the front-runner to become the next Manchester United manager if Erik ten Hag departs this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, Thomas Tuchel is one of the candidates to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. The Dutch tactician faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford after a horrendous 2023/24 campaign. And former Chelsea manager Tuchel is in the pole position to take over at Manchester United this summer.

Thomas Tuchel is one of the best managers of his generation, having achieved success in three countries at the club level. A defender in his playing days, he did not enjoy a long career as a footballer and retired at age 25 after suffering a knee injury. The German tactician entered the coaching sphere in 2007 and has not looked back since then.

Tuchel’s first job in the managerial world came with FC Augsburg II, spending a year at his former club. However, the 50-year-old rose in prominence at FSV Mainz, serving the Bundesliga club for five years before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2015. Tuchel’s first brush with success as a coach came with Dortmund, winning the DFB Pokal in 2016/17.

However, the German tactician’s spell with Borussia Dortmund ended in acrimony before he joined Paris Saint-Germain. And he won six trophies with PSG before another stint ended in bad blood and bitterness. Tuchel’s next assignment came with Chelsea, and he guided the West London club to a shock UEFA Champions League triumph in his debut campaign.

However, Tuchel’s spell with Chelsea did not last long, with the Blues bizarrely sacking him in September 2022. His latest stint has been with Bayern Munich, winning the Bundesliga title last season. However, the former Chelsea manager will leave Bayern this summer after a dreadful 2023/24 campaign. His potential availability has alerted several clubs, including Manchester United.

Manchester United’s interest in Thomas Tuchel comes in the wake of a forgettable 2023/24 campaign that might end without a trophy. In addition, the Red Devils will not qualify for the UEFA Champions League. So, Erik ten Hag faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe viewing Tuchel as the topmost contender to replace the Dutchman.

Tuchel’s links with Manchester United make sense, considering he is a proven winner with trophies in every country. It will be interesting to see if Erik ten Hag can retain his job. However, the 50-year-old former Chelsea manager will be the front-runner to join Manchester United if they sack ten Hag.
