Liverpool are set to appoint Benfica technical director Pedro Marques in a key role in their new look structure under FSG.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirmed the willingness from Liverpool to appoint Benfica’s Technical Director Pedro Marques ahead of the summer. The well experienced executive will bring his vast experience to the new structure under Michael Edwards, but he does seem like a FSG appointment rather than Liverpool’s

Liverpool are pushijng ahead with their plans for the future and are setting the pieces iun their newly establushged football structure at the club. The impending departure of Jurgen Klopp has set the club to fast track their plans, and only a few elements are missing until now.

FSG are keen to switch to a new model involving football operations and after a long process have appointed Michael Edwards as FSG’s CEO of Football. The former sporting director will haev the oversight of the entire system and will work closely wioth newly appointed sporting director Richar Hughes from Bournemouth.

Now, Liverpool are set to raid Euro giants Benfica for their technical director Pedro Marques. The high-performing executive brings a wealth of experience to the table, but he might be more of an FSG appointment rather than a standalone Liverpool one.

Marques spent eight years at Manchester City and six years at Sporting CP prior to that. He will now leave Benfica after nearly six years there. He has worked in different capacity, that included his presence on the firle as well as in the background, as he has achieved enormous success.

Marques was known to former sporting director Julian Ward during the pair’s time at Manchester City. Liverpool have come to know him closely while negotiating the Darwin Nunez deal with Benfica, and were left impressed by the 41-year-old.

FSG will now want him to work closely on certain aspects for Liverpool, as well as their global sports business, which needs attracting some notable stars in different segments. Will he prove a solid appointment or is he a part of what is becoming a very confusing web of complex structures in football? Either way, Marques’ vast experience will do him in good stead, as Liverpool might have a solid man on their hands.
