Manchester United have sounded out an important coaching role for Gary O’Neil in their revamped setup for next season.

According to ESPN, Manchester United are keen to bring Gary O’Neil to the club as part of a new setup. The Red Devils are keen on offering the 40-year-old key man a significant coaching role at the club, although there needs to be clarity on his stature in that system.

Manchester United want Gary O’Neil

Manchester United fans had a tough time convincing themselves about the prospect of having Gareth Southgate in the dugout next season. The England manager saw links to the club in recent days and even commented during one of his recent press conferences.

The Red Devils are looking to shake things up in the background, which would bring the managerial role under scrutiny. They could even sack Erik ten Hag in the process, as INEOS is intent on installing a new system that would have a head coach as opposed to a renowned manager.

Meanwhile, they are linked with many names, with Gary O’Neil the latest to enter their thinking. The report does not clarify what role the Wolves boss will play on board, but they insist Manchester United is keen to appoint the 40-year-old key man for a coaching position.

Now, had this been for the head coach role, things would have been more straightforward, but that’s not the case at the moment. Moreover, O’Neil will have two years on his Wolves deal, which could force Manchester United to pay a hefty compensation fee for the rising manager in the Premier League.

Manchester United planning background changes

Under INEOS, the club are planning many big things in the background, including a new sporting director and potentially even a new manager/head coach. Erik ten Hag might quit if there are unprecedented changes to his role in the background, as there have been many reports persistently stating the Dutchman’s time may come to an end in the summer.

Either, as the report states, they are planning on a new system, or INEOS might bring a manager of their choice as they look to flex their muscles as part of their quest to improve the club. As for the O’Neil links, he might come to the club if it’s for the head coach role, meaning he will barely entertain the concept of being part of a coaching team and leave his otherwise prestigious job at Wolves.
