Liverpool have placed Ruben Amorim on top of their managerial shortlist with the club also looking at other options.
According to Football Insider, Ruben Amorim is on top of Liverpool’s shortlist of potential Jurgen Klopp replacements. The Merseysiders are expected to ramp up their search for a new manager in the coming period. However, any activity for candidates, including the 39-year-old, will ideally begin after the season concludes.
Ruben Amorim top of Liverpool’s list?
There’s been a merry-go-round regarding Liverpool’s manager search as time winds down on Jurgen Klopp’s illustrious time at Anfield. Since the German announced his intention to leave in the summer, the media have kept themselves busy by adding names to the club’s shortlist.
Liverpool are keen to get their decision about a replacement right, as they earmarked Xabi Alonso as the potential successor to Klopp. While there were positive reports early on, the Spaniard is now unsure about a move to Merseyside, with suggestions that he might join Bayern Munich or stay put at Bayer Leverkusen in anticipation of the Real Madrid job next year.
With that in mind, Liverpool have identified several other names as an alternative to Alonso, with Ruben Amorim and Julian Nagelsmann among those. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager of Sporting CP has now been bumped up to the top of that shortlist, with Liverpool likely to begin conversations with him in the coming period.
Sporting CP may want to avoid distraction in their bid to win a second league title under Amorim and might only consider opening talks after the season ends. Should Liverpool consider the 39-year-old, they will have to pay a sizeable fee to obtain the Portuguese manager.
What happened to Liverpool’s other targets?
While Amorim might be seen as a good enough option to replace Klopp, he may not be their priority ahead of the summer. As the report states, he has emerged as the top contender now. Like the Alonso case, Liverpool might have seen failures in pursuit of other names.
Simone Inzaghi was a target, but the Italian appears happy with life at Inter Milan and said they would continue to work on his project at the San Siro. Similarly, they also held an interest in Ange Postecoglou, although Spurs have no interest in letting the Australian leave after only one season at the helm.
