Liverpool are reportedly closing in on appointment of Michael Edwards, who will have an expanded role behind the scenes.
Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards is expected to arrive in a new role, where he will be in charge of the complete footballing operations. Edwards will head Liverpool’s search for a new manager as they prepare for life after Jurgen Klopp. He will also appoint a new sporting director, and Richard Hughes is expected to take over as a replacement for Jorg Schmadtke as per The Athletic.
Edwards has previously done an impeccable job at Liverpool, and he helped them sign the spine of their squad – Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker. There is no doubt that he has a phenomenal eye for talent, and he will be expected to bring in quality players during the summer transfer window.
The 44-year-old will oversee the footballing operations within the club, and he will be expected to work in tandem with incoming sporting director, Richard Hughes as Liverpool look to implement new structures in place.
Michael Edwards has a huge responsibility after Jurgen Klopp leaves
Klopp has already confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the season, and Liverpool are looking at potential replacements. Xabi Alonso, Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi are some of the names the Reds have been linked with.
Replacing Klopp will be a difficult challenge for any manager. But all three of them are highly rated across Europe, and it remains to be seen who Liverpool end up with. Edwards will obviously play a key role in the appointment of the next manager, and it remains to be seen whether he can bring in the right candidate to fill the German’s void.
Klopp has been outstanding for Liverpool so far, and he has helped there when multiple trophies. He will be hoping to finish the season on a high and win more trophies. Liverpool have already won the Carabao Cup this season, and they are currently leading Premier League table. They are also in the latter rounds of the FA Cup, and the UEFA Europa League.
Meanwhile, the return of Edwards will come as a major boost for the club. He knows Liverpool well and should be able to settle in quickly and make the necessary adjustments after the departure of the German manager. He has a proven track record in the Premier League and an amicable relationship with the Liverpool hierarchy as well. The Liverpool fans will certainly be delighted to have him back at the club.
