England manager Gareth Southgate has been linked with a move to Manchester United, a job he is open to taking up.

Gareth Southgate has done a reasonably good job as the manager of the England national side, and Manchester United have been linked with him. A report from TEAMtalk has claimed that the 53-year-old is open to the move, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops.

Southgate guided England to the final of UEFA Euro 2020 and the latter stages of of the last two World Cups. He could prove to be an interesting acquisition for Manchester United if they decide to part ways with Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman could be shown the door at the end of the season.

Manchester United have been quite unconvincing under him this season and despite significant backing in the transfer market, they have not been able to push for major trophies. Their performances have been underwhelming as well, and ten Hag has failed to get the best out of his new signings. Big-money arrivals like Jadon Sancho and Antony have been quite mediocre, and Sancho has already returned on loan to Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United should aim higher

Manchester United are in need of a fresh start, and bringing in a new manager could lift the spirits around the club. However, they are one of the biggest clubs in the world and should be aiming for managers who are proven winners at club level.

Although there is no doubt that Gareth Southgate has done well for England, he does not have a credible record at the club level and he could be an underwhelming appointment for the Manchester United fans. It will be interesting to see how they react to the appointment of the 53-year-old international manager during the summer.

Currently, Manchester United are pushing for Champions League qualification, and it will be interesting to see if they can finish in the top four. Aston Villa and Tottenham are well ahead of them, and Manchester United will need to finish the season really strongly to compete in the Champions league next season.
