Liverpool might pursue 55-year-old Italian transfer guru Frederic Massara as a potential alternative to Michael Edwards.
According to a report by The Independent, Frederic Massara is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are in the market for a new sporting director, with Michael Edwards being their top target. But the 55-year-old transfer guru, who recently served AC Milan as the director of football, has emerged as an alternative to Edwards.
Frederic Massara was a journeyman during his time as a footballer. A graduate of Torino, the Italian was a forward who was the quintessential journeyman at the club level. He represented eight clubs, including two spells with Pescara and Fidelis Andria, before hanging up his boots in 2003.
The 55-year-old then entered the coaching sphere by working as an assistant manager for Benevento (2006/07), Pescara (2007) and Martina Franca (2007/08). But he found his calling as a transfer guru, initially working alongside Walter Sabatini at Palermo FC and AS Roma.
Massara formally became a licensed director of football in 2011 and has since worked for AS Roma, Inter Milan, Jiangsu Suning, and AC Milan. His most successful stint came with AC Milan, with the Rossoneri winning the Serie A title during his time at San Siro. But the highly-rated transfer guru is now a free agent, and the situation has piqued the interest of Liverpool.
The Reds are in the market for a new sporting director after the departure of Jorg Schmadtke. Michael Edwards is the top target for Liverpool, and the Premier League heavyweights have made a unique offer to tempt him to return to the club. However, Edwards is not keen on rejoining Liverpool, forcing the club to consider alternatives.
Florent Ghisolfi has thus emerged as a target for Liverpool. But with OGC Nice having links with Manchester United, a move for the young transfer guru might not be possible. So, Frederic Massara is a viable alternative to Michael Edwards.
With the 55-year-old Italian transfer guru being a free agent, he might be the most approachable candidate for Liverpool. So, it will be interesting to see if the Reds can land the former AC Milan director of football.
