Barcelona will soon approach 36-year-old German tactician Julian Nagelsmann, a target for Liverpool, over a possible summer move.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Julian Nagelsmann is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are in the market for a manager, with Xavi Hernandez calling time on his spell when the 2023/24 season ends. And they will soon contact the 36-year-old to discuss his plans. Meanwhile, he is also a target for Liverpool.
Julian Nagelsmann has been among the best managers in the world for over half a dozen years. The German tactician did not have a fulfilling career as a footballer due to persistent fitness issues. So, he entered the managerial world before turning 30, rising in prominence during his spell with TSG Hoffenheim.
That stint brought him on the radar of most top clubs in the world, but he has only taken up German jobs thus far. The 36-year-old spent two years with RB Leipzig before joining Bayern Munich in 2021. Nagelsmann won three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the 2021/22 Bundesliga title.
But Nagelsmann’s stint with Bayern Munich abruptly ended in 2023, with Die Roten taking the surprising decision to sack him before the 2022/23 season ended. Since then, he has become the German national team’s head coach, replacing Hansi Flick. But his spell with Germany will likely end after UEFA Euro 2024, alerting several top clubs, including Barcelona and Liverpool.
Barcelona’s interest in Julian Nagelsmann is understandable, considering Xavi Hernandez will leave when the 2023/24 season ends. The Catalan giants thus need a new manager to carry forward their youth-driven project. And the Bundesliga-winning tactician might be the ideal candidate to replace Xavi.
As for Liverpool, the Merseyside club will part ways with Jurgen Klopp when the 2023/24 season concludes. The German tactician wants a sabbatical after feeling fatigued by the Liverpool job following nearly nine years at Anfield. So, replacing Klopp with his compatriot might be the right move.
But Barcelona will soon approach Nagelsmann to ask him about his plans. Appointing the 36-year-old will come with some risks, as he will miss the pre-season campaign. But Barcelona will look to contact him to discuss his future. So, it will be interesting to see if he joins a club this summer.
