Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly could be persuaded to replace under-fire Mauricio Pochettino with Jose Mourinho in the Stamford Bridge dugout given his “proven track record of winning trophies.”
According to journalist Paul Brown via GIVEMESPORT, former Manchester United and Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is “waiting in the wings” for a chance to manage Chelsea for a third time as the pressure continues to mount on Mauricio Pochettino.
Days after being hammered 4-1 by Liverpool at Anfield, Chelsea shipped another four goals at home to Gary O’Neil’s Wolves side in a disappointing defeat in front of their frustrated supporters on Sunday.
Chelsea dropped to 11th place in the standings after suffering their tenth league loss of the year against Wolves. The Blues’ aspirations to play in Europe again next season are dwindling quickly, as they are currently closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
The 51-year-old Argentine admitted no one is safe following Sunday’s 4-2 hammering by Wolves, is under pressure to turn the club’s fortunes around to preserve his hot-seat. The Stamford Bridge faithful booed and chanted the names of former owner Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho during Sunday’s defeat.
Although Pochettino has received a vote of confidence from Todd Boehly ahead a crucial FA Cup fourth round replay against Aston Villa on Wednesday, the Chelsea hierarchy do have the determination that their expensive squad should qualify for Europe this season, and could turn to fans’ favourite Mourinho to salvage their flailing campaign, as per Brown.
The once Special One, who won three Premier titles across two spells, is currently out of work and is keen to return to Stamford Bridge as he hunts a way back into management after being sacked by Serie A club AS Roma.
It is understandable that Chelsea’s owners would be tempted to hire the former Manchester United and Tottenham boss, who has won eight major trophies across his two previous spells with the Blues, including three league titles. They don’t have too many other names to turn to, especially if they get rid of Pochettino now midway through the season.
World-class managers such as Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are difficult to find, and even if they were, given Chelsea’s current state, it may take some convincing to bring them to Stamford Bridge.
