Former AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho is open to the idea of making a sensational return to Manchester United.

According to the Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho is keen on making a return to Manchester United. The Portuguese manager is currently without a job after being sacked by AS Roma a few weeks ago and is now on the lookout for his next destination.

Jose Mourinho at Manchester United: What Happened the Last Time?

Mourinho was in charge of Manchester United from 2016 to 2018. He took charge of the club following the departure of Louis van Gaal. The Portuguese manager won the Europa League and Carabao Cup in his very first season and followed it up with a second-place finish in the league next season.

While he has got the desired results, there was growing tension between people at the club and Mourinho. He was not on good terms with those in power, and his departure seemed inevitable. Eventually, he was sacked by the Manchester United board following a defeat to Liverpool in December 2018.

What Has Mourinho Been Up to Since Leaving Manchester United?

Post his Manchester United exit, Mourinho had his only trophy-less stint at Tottenham Hotspur before joining AS Roma. The Portuguese manager guided the Italian club to their very first European trophy (UEFA Europa Conference League) in his maiden season in charge. He also took them to the final of the Europa League in the second season.

After two rather successful seasons, AS Roma decided to part ways with the former Real Madrid manager in January. Their financial struggles were one of the reasons for the Portuguese tactician’s departure. With the Roma chapter now over, Mourinho is looking for his next destination. Recent reports linked him with Newcastle United, although that is not possible.

The former Chelsea boss seems to keen on making a return to Manchester United. He feels he has unfinished business at Old Trafford and wants to make a shocking return. Mourinho has made it his mission to return to Old Trafford to take charge of Manchester United again should the opportunity arise at some point in the future.

The Portuguese manager wants to work with the new ownership. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are taking over the football operations of Manchester United as a part of their 25 per cent investment, and the ex-Chelsea boss is keen on working with them.

The Red Devils are struggling in the ongoing season under Erik ten Hag. If things go from bad to worse in the next few months, there could be an opportunity for Mourinho’s sensational return to Old Trafford.
