Julian Ward on Manchester United radar for recruitment role

Manchester United are plotting a surprise move for Julian Ward for the sporting director post despite his strong links to Liverpool.

Daily Telegraph have linked former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward with the Manchester United role. British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who purchased a 25% stake in the Red Devils and took control of sporting operations, remains keen to appoint a viable name in that executive position.

Julian Ward linked with Manchester United

Julian Ward spent the best part of 11 years as an understudy to Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards. The duo were primarily responsible for some notable transfers at Anfield and aided Jurgen Klopp’s cause to strengthen the club again.

Edwards’s departure from the club saw Ward take over the sporting director role. But he left within a few months that left some people in shock. However, per his contract, he officially left the position in May, meaning the former Liverpool sporting director can take over at another club.

Manchester United have had Ward on their shortlist since Sir Jim Ratcliffe began proceedings to purchase a minority stake in Manchester United. Others are on the list, but the former Liverpool sporting director’s work at Anfield may have raised some eyebrows at Old Trafford, as they are keen to embark on a journey to bring the team back to its best.

The word around Ward is that he might like to take some time away from football. Despite only operating in the leading role at Anfield for a few months, he did a lot of work during those 11 years at the club. Moreover, given his strong links to Liverpool, some may even doubt whether he would entertain the prospect of joining Manchester United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe eyes a top-notch sporting director

The sporting director’s role has been important in club football for many years. Manchester United need someone with a solid personality to take the club forward. So, Sir Ratcliffe has understandably focused on getting a top-notch man for the role.

Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth remains a big target, while there are links to many others, including Paul Mitchell. As things stand, Sir Ratcliffe’s entry into the club has been finalised but awaits Premier League approval, which should only be a formality.

As soon as things get rolling in the background, many could expect changes to how the club operates. As for Erik ten Hag, he remains safe in his role until the end of the season. However, with a new sporting director expected to arrive, Sir Ratcliffe might also look to make ruthless changes that benefit the club in the short and long term.
