Real Madrid might turn to 60-year-old Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho to replace Carlo Ancelotti ahead of the 2024/25 season.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Jose Mourinho is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Merengues are scouring the market for a manager amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Carlo Ancelotti. And the Portuguese tactician has emerged as a target for Los Blancos.
Jose Mourinho is one of the greatest managers of all time. The 60-year-old has won 26 trophies in his career thus far, including the UEFA Champions League twice. Those two European triumphs were all the sweeter because they came with two unheralded clubs in the context of the competition.
The Portuguese tactician has won at least one league title in every country where he has managed a club. His only stint in Spain came with Real Madrid, where he spent three years and won three trophies. These included a record-breaking La Liga triumph, as Los Blancos enjoyed an excellent 2011/12 campaign.
Mourinho is currently at AS Roma, where he won his fifth European title in the 2021/22 season, guiding them to the UEFA Europa Conference League. The Giallorossi nearly went back-to-back last term but lost in the Europa League final against Sevilla. But Mourinho’s men has been sub-par in Serie A, failing to clinch a top-four finish thus far.
They currently find themselves tenth on the Serie A table after a slow start to the season. That has left the 60-year-old in a spot of bother, with his job on the line in the coming weeks. However, Mourinho’s stock remains high, with his former club Real Madrid considering him as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
Reports earlier this year also linked the Portuguese tactician with the Real Madrid job ahead of the 2023/24 season. But Ancelotti remained at the Santiago Bernabeu, committing the ongoing campaign to Los Blancos. However, Ancelotti’s future is uncertain, with Brazil looking to appoint him as the head coach for the senior team.
Mourinho’s stature might have reduced in the last few years. But Real Madrid’s stance is understandable, considering Ancelotti’s success in his second stint at the Bernabeu. Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso is another top managerial target for Los Blancos. So, it will be interesting to see which coach arrives at the Bernabeu as the next Real Madrid boss.
