Liverpool establish contact with Max Eberl over sporting director role

Liverpool are reportedly hoping to appoint Max Eberl as their next sporting director and have contacted him for a move.

A report from 90min claims that Liverpool have already made contact with the representatives of former RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl. Recent updates have suggested that Bayern Munich are also keen on signing the German transfer guru.

Jorg Schmadtke is currently the sporting director at the Premier League club, and he signed a one-year contract with them earlier this summer. The German has done an impressive job so far, and he has overseen the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

However, the 59-year-old’s contract is expiring at the end of the season, and Liverpool will have to plan for a future without him. To that end, Max Eberl recently emerged as a candidate for the position.

Eberl did an exceptional job at RB Leipzig before leaving his position with the German club in September. Apparently, he is open to a new challenge, and a number of clubs across Europe are keeping tabs on him.

He enabled RB Leipzig to sign a number of talented young players over the years and helped them put together a formidable squad. Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are keen on appointing him as their next sporting director as well. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp can convince him to move to the Premier League.

The opportunity to build something special at Anfield could be an attractive option for Eberl, and he could form a quality partnership with Klopp at the helm. Liverpool have seen what a quality sporting director can do at a club, and Michael Edwards helped shape them into genuine title contenders over the years.

Eberl could have a similar transformative effect at Liverpool if the Reds can secure his signature. Liverpool have a talented squad at their disposal, and they are a couple of quality additions away from competing for major trophies every season. Eberl could help them snap up quality bargains from around Europe and it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds.
