Aston Villa are set to appoint reputed transfer guru Monchi as their new Sporting Director, with the executive likely to leave Sevilla.

According to Sky Sports, Aston Villa are closing in on appointing Monchi as their new Sporting Director. The move comes after prolonged thinking by the Villa board, disappointed after the proposed move for Mateu Alemany collapsed at the 11th hour.

A club like Aston Villa are eager to get out of the periphery and build themselves into a top football institution. Not that there were doubts about the club’s stature in England; they only want to move forward with modern ideas.

Things have changed in the past season with the appointment of Unai Emery. As a club, Villa boasts considerable funds and has the means to bring some top players to Villa Park. However, for that, they needed a world-class manager and also a Sporting director to aid proceedings.

Emery’s has transformed this side from their once relegation-threatened tag to now Conference League incumbents. Their eighth-placed finish was a testament to the Spaniard and his work. Emery even went without signing new players in the January window, but things are differently planned for the summer.

There’s a glaring need for a sporting director to incline themselves with some of the new-age clubs. Most top English sides have that role occupied by capable individuals, with Aston Villa also planning to bring someone in.

Some quality players are on their shortlist, and the club are eager to sign them in the summer. Villa will need someone to represent them adequately and convince the stars of their project. Emery would certainly welcome the addition and was eager to work with previous candidate Mateu Alemany.

The Barcelona director seemed destined to join Aston Villa recently, only to make a U-Turn and stay in Catalonia. Since then, there’s been an impasse in the search for a new sporting director. However, talks of appointing Monchi accelerated in the last few days.

The Sevilla’s director’s comments post the club’s win over Roma in the Europa League Final hinted at a possible departure from the La Liga side. He has done commendable work wherever he has been before, including Roma. He was previously linked with Arsenal but never took up the position.

The reputed transfer guru remains a revered name in the market, and Aston Villa are now close to appointing the Sevilla man. Monchi could bring some much-needed representation and convincing power for Villa in the market. They could start attracting top talents and prepare well for the toughest challenges.

He could aid Emery with transfer plans and targets. More details about the appointment could emerge in the coming days. Monchi could relish working with a club with ample money to work within the market.
