Liverpool are set to appoint a new sporting director at the end of the season, and they have been in talks with Jorg Schmadtke.
Jorg Schmadtke worked at Wolfsburg for four years before leaving the club in February. The 59-year-old transfer guru has had similar roles at German clubs Hanover and 1. FC Koln in the past. However, he is yet to test himself in a foreign league, and it remains to be seen whether he can land the Liverpool job in the coming weeks.
Liverpool need to bring in a sporting director who can oversee recruitment at the club. According to a report from The Guardian, Schmadtke will have an important role in the transfer committee at Liverpool, and he will play a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recruitment this summer.
The Reds need a major rebuild, especially in the midfield. It has been a disappointing season for Liverpool, and they will have to bring in the right reinforcements if they want to compete at the top of the table once again. Liverpool might miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification this season. And for a club of their stature, it would be a devastating blow.
Schmadtke will be expected to bring in talents who can elevate the quality of the squad without burning a hole in the pocket. Liverpool simply do not have the finances to compete with clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea or Manchester United.
They have been extremely clever with their scouting and recruitment over the last few years, and former sporting director Michael Edwards did an exceptional job at Anfield. Schmadtke clearly has big shoes to fill and it remains to be seen whether the German can deliver.
Meanwhile, on the transfer front, Liverpool have been linked with a host of flames in the midfield. Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham is reportedly on the radar. But Liverpool are unlikely to be able to afford him given the prices quoted around in the media. Argentine international Alexis Mac Allister happens to be a target as well.
Liverpool will lose players like Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as free agents this summer. Loan signing Arthur Melo is set to move on as well. It is imperative that Liverpool improve their midfield considerably, and Schmadtke will be expected to help Jurgen Klopp plug these gaps in the squad.
